Maersk Line IT Finance streamlining
Process optimization in financial reporting reduced turn around time from 10 to 4 days
Situation
- Maersk Line IT is the internal IT function for AP Moller Maersk shipping activities, the world leading container and shipping company, and oversee IT & network operations, infrastructure and application development
- The CFO of Maersk Line IT was troubled by long turn-around times for reporting, poor data quality and unclear roles and responsibilities in the finance area- but how to address?
Imago Advisory approach
- Imago Advisory led an effort working seamlessly with the MLIT finance organization to first identify and describe all processes in the finance area, assigned clear roles and responsibilities for these (RACI) and crafted new clear goals and targets for all functions
- Together with the international set of controllers, we analyzed and identified root causes for turn-around time of the monthly reporting process, crafted new key data structure including GL accounts and master data items in SAP, created new accounting instructions and made use of a business intelligence solution to enable slice & dice analytics
- Finally, we conducted and engaging kick-off with all employees in the finance area, performance management processes to keep the course and supported pilot program to anchor new financial reporting process
Outcome
- Turn around time for the monthly financial reporting process was reduced from 10 to 4 days, and due to the business intelligence support discussions between business owners and controllers were lifted to a new level
- Clear ownership for all processes and goals. In fact, the documentation was referred to as the new bible and stayed long in the organization even after CFO rotated to a new role
